If you can figure it out, you can manage it!
You can only discover your true potential in managing an accommodation facility if you know the key performance indicators (KPIs) and are able to work with them consistently over time.
Managing a hotel or other lodging facility is similar to managing any other business—and that requires certain prerequisites. One of them is the ability to understand at least the basic key performance indicators.
In the HoReCa sector, a wide range of metrics are tracked, but to understand basic economic principles, it’s enough to start with just a few of the most important ones. The rest will come gradually with experience.
A common mistake operators make is that when sales or reservations are sluggish, they look for the problem exclusively in marketing. As a result, they invest in advertising without examining the actual cause. The cause often lies elsewhere—in ineffective revenue management, which is based precisely on knowledge of and proper use of key performance indicators.
Up to 80% of a revenue manager’s work is analytical. Properly evaluated data helps sales and marketing teams avoid shooting in the dark, enabling them to reach the right guests at the right time, at the right price, and through the appropriate distribution channel.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re a novice revenue manager, an accommodation operator, or an experienced professional. Key performance indicators are a universal tool without which it’s impossible to consciously and effectively manage revenue, plan, make decisions, or provide relevant feedback to the team.
The hotel business, like any other, is built on fundamental economic principles. It’s not enough to simply plug numbers into formulas—you need to understand their meaning, context, and how they impact overall performance.
If you’d like to improve your KPIs, or if you’re unsure whether you’re using them correctly, you’ll find courses and resources on this very topic in our Education section.
Without knowledge of basic KPIs, it is impossible to achieve long-term, sustainable results, improve professionalism, or build a positive image for the industry.
